"Beslan Mothers" Committee claims problems with employment of former hostages

This year, victims of the school seizure in Beslan have obtained help for treatment and rehabilitation, but there is still a problem with employment of former hostages, while the law on the status of victims of terror acts has not yet been adopted, Susanna Dudieva, the head of the "Beslan Mothers" Committee, has stated.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on September 1, the above mourning events in North Ossetia started with a memorial service and laying of flowers at the Beslan school, which was seized by terrorists 17 years ago.

On September 1, 2004, terrorists took 1128 hostages in a gym of the Beslan school No. 1. The special operation to release the hostages was finished on September 3, 2004. As a result of the terror act, 334 people were killed, including 186 children, and other 810 people were injured.

The traditional press conference of the "Beslan Mothers" was held on September 1. Ms Dudieva began her speech with assessments of the investigation into the terror act; then, she drew attention to the insufficient, in her opinion, authorities' actions to support the victims, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent who was present at the event has reported.

"We still have no law on the status of terror act victims – this is the most important issue that concerns all of us and those who had suffered in other terror acts," Susanna Dudieva has stated.

She told about the material help to victims. Six of those who are most severely affected by the consequences of trauma will have the opportunity to undergo rehabilitation abroad. Each of them will receive 2 million roubles from the federal budget for three years, she has added.

A separate discussion topic was the training and employment of former hostages. The "Beslan Mothers" Committee helps former hostages to enter universities and petition for them at employment centre to help with job-finding, Ms Dudieva said.

"The employment issue is always on the agenda. This year, we managed to find jobs for several young guys; the local employment centre helps with this, but the problem is still very serious," she has noted.
