New Agvali Imam introduced to local parish

The council of religious leaders has chosen the Imam from the village of Verkhnee Gakvari as the new Imam for the Agvali mosque and introduced him to the local jamaat, residents have informed.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on August 20, the day of Friday namaz (prayer), in the outskirt of the Dagestani village of Agvali, a lot of people gathered and announced the appointment of the Imam from another village. The namaz itself was held not in the mosque, but in the gym; and it was conducted not by the Imam, but by the Muezzin, who acted on behalf of Magomedsaigid Kadimagomedov, who was elected to the position of the Imam by the villagers. Later, religious leaders of the Tsumada District of Dagestan and regional officials gathered in the administration to discuss the problem of appointing a new Imam.

On August 16, after Ramazan Isaev, the imam of the local mosque, fought with one of the local residents in the village of Agvali in the Tsumadinsky District, armed law enforcers arrived in the village. The police took control over the entrances to the village to prevent a mass fight. The villagers independently, without the participation of representatives of the Muftiate of Dagestan, proclaimed Magomedsaigid Kadimagomedov to be their new imam.

The new Imam was introduced to believers at the central mosque of Agvali after a meeting of religious leaders, local officials and public activists. Yusup, the Imam of the village of Verkhnee Gakvari, was elected as the Agvali Imam, a local resident Abdurakhim Mashtikhi, told the "Caucasian Knot".

A source from the administration of the Tsumada District has confirmed to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent that the Imam of the village of Agvali had been elected, and that the Imam of the village of Verkhnee Gakvari had become the Agvali Imam. "Everything is fine: the Imam was elected; the mosque was opened. [Collective] namaz was held," said the source.
